Just Add Water: How to Enhance Your Eye Shadow

Day to day, soft eyeshadow is all we need but every now and then (read: Saturday night) we all want to amp up the colour volume and create a look that’s a little more daring. Something, perhaps, like Nelly Furtado created on the red carpet at the Billboard Awards this week…

Our mineral shadows are more versatile than you might know. Dry, they produce a soft, shadowy colour that glides on beautifully and stays put. Damp they have an intense effect that will turn heads.
This morning we tested our Mineral Matte Shadow in Bermuda both wet and dry and posted a quick pic on our new instagram account (@elesmineralmakeup).
Take a look at the results…

Believe it or not, that is the exact same shadow. Mineral shadow is extremely versatile and you can create just about any look you want.
To transform the soft blue you see at the top we simply took some shadow on our hand and used a damp eyeshadow brush to blend. You could use this more intense shade as your shadow or could use the dry mineral shadow and use a short angle eyelining brush to create a bold eyeliner that perfectly matches your shadow.
Remember, it’s best to avoid using the damp brush directly on your eyeshadow palette. Keeping it dry will help increase the shelf life of your makeup.

EXPERT TIP: ELES creator Liane Scior uses eye drops instead of water to enhance her shadows. It has the same effect but has the added bonus of being completely anti-bacterial which is always comforting when it comes to eyes!
The clever Liane also suggests putting a few drops of visine in mascara that is drying up to revive it .Who knew eye drops were so glam?

Has Your Makeup Expired?

Ever left some makeup in the bottom of your beauty bag and rediscovered it two years later? It’s possible that rediscovery you were so excited about could leave you with an infection.
Like expired food, expired makeup can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that, when applied, can cause infection. Unlike food, makeup expiration dates are not completely obvious so we’re here to sort fact from fiction with this go-to guide for your makeup’s shelf life and some quick tips on making it last a little longer.

How can I tell if my makeup is expired?
– Smell your cosmetics; if they have an unusual odor, be safe and discard
Mascara is one to watch out for, it expires in just three months! Expired mascara will have a gasoline-like smell and will be dry and cakey.
– Anything liquid and all lip products tend to dry up when it is expired
– Powders often develop a film of dust when they’ve expired
– Cream powders will show tiny moist droplets
– Any colour changes in makeup can signal expiration
– Nail polish becomes clumpy with pigments sitting at the bottom
– If your products texture has changed dramatically, it’s probably expired

Quick Guide:
From the time you first open your product, you should discard after…
Powders and shadows: 2 years
Cream shadows: 12 to 18 months
Foundation: 1 year
Lipstick & lipliner: 1 year
Mascara & eyeliners: 3 months
Makeup brushes: Clean weekly using a mild detergent

Make your Makeup Last the Extra Mile
– Make sure you store products closed tight and stored out of sunlight, as this can destroy the preservatives.
– If you have an eye infection absolutely step away from all your eye products. Eyeshadow, liner, mascara, everything should be put away until the infection clears up and if you accidentally use something, throw it out.
Mineral eyeshadows can be mixed with water but it’s best practice to take a bit of the eyeshadow out and blend with water on your hand rather than applying direct to the product.
– Wash out your brushes and sponges regularly and sponges should be replaced at least once a month

After reading this guide, are you thinking it’s about time you updated some of your products? Are you guilty of hoarding makeup for years? Clean out your makeup stores, wash all your brushes, purchase new high-quality brushes to replace any that are seriously sparse and head to the ELES shop to replace any products that needed throwing out!

The Shake Up: How to Revive Your Beauty Routine

This week we can really feel winter coming in. Our boots are out, our umbrellas have been doing double time and flannelette is our new favourite material. In winter, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. Whether it’s a workout rut, a cycle of staying in with a movie every Saturday night or a workplace rut, the cold weather seems to make it much harder to just snap out of it.
While changing up your beauty routine might not seem like a big deal, the daily shake up might be exactly what you need to change your mindset and help you out of that rut.
So, we’ve compiled a list of ways you can revive your regular beauty routine and shake things up…

1. Break the Rules
You might have heard redheads shouldn’t wear red lipstick… well we’ve got news for you

Yep, sometimes breaking the rules seriously pays off so give it a try! You’ve got nothing to lose, makeup is not a tattoo!

2.  Go Pro
Professional makeup artists don’t get where they are without training. They know what is going to suit your face shape, skin type and colouring and they have techniques up their sleeve that are truly something else.
Have a pro do your makeup and take note of the techniques they use. Let them know you want to try news things and that you’re open to suggestions. You might not like everything they create but you’ll come out inspired and with at least a few little tricks up your sleeve.

3. Do Less
When we’re changing up our beauty routine, it’s tempting to simply add an extra product. If that sounds like you, try instead to take one of your regular products away or replace it with something else.
You could even set yourself a time limit and create a look in just 10 minutes. Or 5 if you’re really brave.

4. Get Luminous
Creating luminosity is easier than you think – we promise! So often people neglect illuminators in fear of looking too shiny or too done up. With the right application, an illuminator can change your look completely and give you that glow you’ve been looking for.
Our Mineral Sheer Veil is super easy to use and gives the skin a subtle glow like no other. Customer Karla says, “This is a No-Nonsense product. You want an Illuminating effect, it will execute that, amazing for an all-over body glow, or a dewy finish when mixing with your favourite foundation / moisturiser. A great investment to have!”

5. Use Colour
Love the colour of that eyeshadow but not sure if it’s ‘wearable’? Try it anyway! With a bit of courage and a great blending tool, you might find it’s more flattering, subtle and wearable than you would expect.

6. Hair Raisers
Switch your part from centre to side. Or from right side to left. If you’re addicted to your GHD, let it go for a few days. If you always blow dry, let your hair drip dry for once just to see what happens. If you’ve always got your hair down, wear it up.
There are so many easy and incredible ways to wear your hair, it’s a shame to stick to the same old faithful ‘do!

7. Brow Power
First of all, make sure you’ve followed the three steps to brow perfection so you have a base to work with. Then take your eyebrow pencil and experiment by making your brows more prominent than you ever have before. Step away from the mirror and come back later to check them out again then rework until you find a level that your comfortable with. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – eyebrows really shape the face!

8.Try Liquid
Pencil eyeliner is easy to use and great for basics but liquid liner can take your look to a whole new level. Change it up with liquid and try some of these liner looks on for size…

Celebrity Beauty Inspiration: Jess Hart

It just so happens that today is Aussie model Jessica Hart’s 26th birthday so we thought we’d take our Monday morning beauty lessons srraight from the blonde bombshell.

Jess does minimalist disheveled beach babe perfectly and we want to show you how you, too, can get the look. Here’s a close-up for reference…

Less is More…
Jess knows that sometimes less is more when it comes to makeup. She nails the natural look and you can too.
BASE
1. After cleansing, toning and moisturising, use a primer like to start to build that flawless base
2. Apply light foundation or tinted moisturiser
3. Follow with a gentle sweeping of ELES Bronzer Duo to the face using a large, fluffy brush. This delivers both bronzing and shimmer in the one hit, leaving you with a healthy glow just like Jess.
4. Finally, apply a soft pink blush to the apples of your cheeks.
EYES
1. Apply a soft peach or nude matte shadow to the eyelids
2. Take a colour dense eyeliner in black and apply to your top eye line
3. Finish with a soft coating of black mascara
4. Use the built-in brush on your ELES Brow Blender and brush your brows in an upward motion. Use the pencil to define the brows.
LIPS
1. Jess is wearing a gloss with a little more in this pic and it really completes her look. Try one of an ELES Liptox to plump your lips and deliver a sexy sheen

And you’re done! This laid back look works from day to night, from beach to bar and beyond.
