Why use Mineral Liquid Eyeliner?

You might have noticed all ELES eyeliners and other mineral eyeliners boasting the fact that they are free from parabens. This is all well and good unless, of course, you don’t actually know what parabens are. You’ve probably heard the word parabens, you know they’re bad, you know to avoid them, but do you know what they actually are and why you wouldn’t want them in your eyeliner?
We’re here to tell you.

What are Parabens?
Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in personal care products. Methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben are all names of common parabens but there are plenty more and, yes, they are all impossible to pronounce!

What’s the concern?
Researchers have found parabens in breast tumors. No one has been able to explain how they got there or why they were there, meaning the possibility that the parabens could have something to do with the cancer is very real. The FDA, National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society stipulate that research findings indicating a possible connection between paraben and cancer are inconclusive, and that more research needs to be conducted.
Yes, the information is inconclusive but erring on the side of caution, especially when there are so many paraben-free alternatives, seems the safest way to go until research proves parabens have nothing to do with cancer. Because that’s just not a risk you want to take.
It doesn’t end there though, parabens can cause skin irritation, rosacea and dermatitis.
It’s not all about you either, when washed down the drain and into the waterways, they can damage rivers, lakes and oceans. Sea life is also affected, parabens have been associated with frogs developing extra limbs and even changing sex… scary.

Why eyeliner?
Anything that is applied close to your eye area has the habit of creeping into your eyes. Liquid eyeliner sits incredibly close to your eye so it’s not something you want to mess around with and if you’ve ever experienced skin irritation around the eyes you’ll know it’s not worth the risk.
Many liquid eyeliners contain parabens but with recent research, more and more savvy brands are jumping on board the paraben-free bandwagon. Make sure you always check the labels and do your research.
